23rd November 1963 was a day remembered for the assassination of President Kennedy. But it was also the day that the UK's longest running science fiction programme began.
Doctor Who represents a programme that spans decades, with children and parents watching from behind the sofa or through fingers to see what happens next to the time traveller and his many companions as they face terrors across the universe.
Not only does Doctor Who chart the development of drama on British television across the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and into the 21st Century, but is welcomed fondly as essential TV and brilliant family viewing! 10 actors have played the role of the Doctor, all representing the character in a variety of ways, whilst still maintaining his perhaps innocent belief of good over evil.
In 1989 the TV series was cut by the BBC, to be followed by a broad range of novels, audio dramas and spin off videos which continue on to this day.
In 1996 a TV movie was made jointly between the BBC and Universal, with the idea to create more. It didn't do so well in the US and no further episodes were made.
In 2005 Doctor Who returned to Saturday nights with 13 episodes starring Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as companion Rose. At the end of the 2005 season Christopher Eccleston regenerated into David Tennant who then appeared in a great Christmas Special - The Christmas Invasion.
