Over 40 years of Doctor Who!

23rd November 1963 was a day remembered for the assassination of President Kennedy.

But it was also the day that the UK's longest running science fiction programme began.

Doctor Who represents a programme that spans decades, with children and parents

watching from behind the sofa or through fingers to see what happens next to the

time traveller and his many companions as they face terrors across the universe.

Not only does Doctor Who chart the development of drama on British television

across the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and into the 21st Century,

but is welcomed fondly as essential TV and brilliant family viewing!

10 actors have played the role of the Doctor, all representing the character

in a variety of ways, whilst still maintaining his perhaps innocent belief of good over evil.

In 1989 the TV series was cut by the BBC, to be followed by a broad range of novels,

audio dramas and spin off videos which continue on to this day.

In 1996 a TV movie was made jointly between the BBC and Universal,

with the idea to create more. It didn't do so well in the US and no further episodes were made.

In 2005 Doctor Who returned to Saturday nights with 13 episodes starring

Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as companion Rose.

At the end of the 2005 season Christopher Eccleston regenerated into David Tennant who

then appeared in a great Christmas Special - The Christmas Invasion.

Updated and refreshed the series won through on the ratings and with David Tennant
at the helm Season 2 was again very successful!

With Season 3 already agreed, Season 2 ended with the departure of Billie Piper,
Christmas saw Catherine Tate's Runaway Bride, and new companion
Freema Agyeman found her feet in the 2007 season... and while she left at the end of Season 3,
we're promised her return in Season 4,
while Catherine Tate as Donna returns as the Doc's new companion!

In between seasons 2 and 3, spin off series "Torchwood" gave us more on companion
Captain Jack Harkness and the pilot episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Captain Jack's back in Season 3 of Doctor Who, but 2008 saw his spin off continue
with Torchwood Season 2 in early 2008!  In the meantime The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures broke records for their time slot!

So it's all go! Doctor Who is back on the TV with a whole new generation of children and adults

ready to discover the latest Doctor's adventures!
